8.3 INSTALLATION OF AREA No. 19

32 mm Pavers over Type S Mortar with Bond Breaker

8.3.A INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

The concrete substrate slab was cleaned of any foreign materials and debris prior to placement of the setting system. A 0.1 mm (4 mil) polyethylene film was laid over the concrete slab to prevent bond between the mortar bed and slab. The pavement setting bed consisted of Type "S" masonry mortar (1 part portland cement to part hydrated lime to 4 parts washed sand). Thickness of the setting bed was screeded to approximately 38 mm. The granite pavers were a combination of 756 x 375 x 32 mm sawn edge units and 172 x 172 x 32 mm split edge units. All paving units had a thickness tolerance of mm. The bottom surfaces of the granite pavers were parged with neat cement (portland cement and water) mixture prior to placement on the mortar bed. The pavers were aligned and leveled maintaining 10 mm joints between sawn edges and 20 mm joints between split edges.

After allowing the mortar bed to cure, the joints were filled with Dow Corning SL (Self-Leveling, Silicone) Parking Structure Sealant (See Appendix E).

8.3.B DATES

Installation of Granite Pavers: 06 October, 1995

Caulking of Joints: 08 November, 1995

Traffic allowed on Pavement: 13 November, 1995

8.3.C OBSERVATIONS:

May, 1997: Paving units appear to be in good condition with no bonding or cracking problems. The silicone joint sealer appears to have good adhesion to the joint surfaces of the granite paving units. There is a concern with the self-leveling sealant that the abundance of fillers and plasticizers present in the sealant chemistry would rapidly migrate into the perimeter of the paving units and cause unsightly staining. Such staining is not apparent a this time.
