Cold Spring Granite uses Solid Modeling to Create American Flag

Cold Spring, Minn. - Developing two-dimensional (2-D) drawings into computer-generated three-dimensional (3-D) Solid Models is nothing new for Cold Spring Granite. Dating back to 1994, drafter Rick Schmid began experimenting with AutoCAD's 3-D drawing and Solid Modeling techniques.

Visualizing complex pieces and assemblies can be very difficult from standard two-dimensional drawings; however, a Solid Model or 3-D image can be generated from this 2-D geometry, resulting in a simulated view of the actual finished project. These 3-D images are realistically rendered and can be rotated to any view. According to drafter Rick Schmid, "The study of a Solid Model can produce accurate detailing information--speeding the approval process, and often times reduce drafting time, fabrication time and costs."

The majority of projects consisting of complex designs are manufactured using one of the company's 12 CNC Diamond Wire Saws. With a combination of expert drafters and craftsmen, Cold Spring Granite utilizes the latest in technology to create unusual and complex shapes meeting project requirements in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The solid granite American flag is an example of one of the projects that was created employing Solid Modeling and crafted by a CNC Diamond Wire Saw. The Academy Black granite base is 6'-0" x 2'-3" x 0'-8" and the flag is 4'-4 ¼" x 2'-9 ½" x 1'-3½" and made of Sierra White granite, which is highlighted in red, white and blue.
